Another month, another unelected Board of Education meeting. Here's what we had to say.
Jennie Biggs, CPS Parent and RYH Board Member, spoke on behalf of RYH. Here is her statement:
Many LSC members are reporting tears at their meetings this week because they don’t know how their schools will run:
You cut $179M from district run schools this summer.Read more

Hope everyone is enjoying the last few days of summer break. Lots of parents have been asking us if there is going to be a strike this fall. Nobody has a definitive answer to this right now. The process is that the teachers will vote for another strike authorization next week and if they choose to strike, there will be a ten-day window in which the CPS and CTU can work to resolve things. The timing is uncertain but we know that there won’t be a strike in the next few weeks due to this timeline. RYH hopes that the CPS and CTU can work to come up with a contract that is amenable to the teachers. The uncertainty makes things difficult for all of us, but we understand that conditions in the schools have become very tough with all of our schools being asked to do more with so much less. Teachers, students, and families face a very challenging learning situation. While CPS and CTU seek a resolution, Raise Your Hand will continue to fight for revenue at the state and city level so that all Chicago’s children have what they deserve to thrive.Read more
In a surprise announcement yesterday, the IL State Board of Education said it would replace PARCC with the SAT, which would be given to high-school juniors. The state still plans to use PARCC for 3-8th grades.Read more
There were many great speakers at the January unelected BOE meeting. We are posting three statements below.
Raise Your Hand Board Member and CPS Parent Jennie Biggs handed in the attached document which includes comments made by people who signed our Cancel $60M "Obama Prep" Selective Enrollment High School petition. Since the Aramark food service contract was up for renewal, she also handed in a packet which included CPS high school students questioning the quality of the food they are served.Read more
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was in town yesterday and about 50 parents (some from RYH) waited for him outside a school in Kenwood. Note, the IL state board of education has been saying that the Feds will cut a billion dollars in funding if 95% of students in IL don't take the PARCC this year.Read more
This is our written testimony. Because so many people were signed up to speak, we were asked to keep our spoken testimony to 1 minute each, so we had to pare down.Read more

Statement from More than a Score (RYH is a member)
Recently, the Superintendent of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) distributed inaccurate information about a student’s ability to opt-out of state tests. In the “Weekly Message” dated 10/28/2014 from Chris Koch on the ISBE website it is stated that “students may not opt out of the PARCC assessment,” and that “a district that allows students to opt out of the state’s required test would directly violate both federal and state law.”Read more
