Last day to weigh in on ISBE proposal to lift class size caps

Today is the last day to offer public comment to the Illinois Statre Board of Education about their proposal to lift class size limits on special education class rooms. This proposed change would impact both children in special education and general education classrooms.

What can you do?

Email Shelley Helton at ISBE:

If you're a parent of a child in special education, include info on how this change would impact your child. If you don't have a child in special education, this proposal would eliminate the 30/70 rule. Currently, a general education classroom cannot have more than 30% of students in the room with IEPS. This proposal would eliminate that limit of 30%.

Make sure to include info that you oppose the proposed amendment to 23 Ill Adm Code 226; 37 Ill Reg 2637.

Attached is a letter from Access Living to ISBE explaining why they oppose this proposal.

We have heard there have been over 4,200 public comments submitted. Add your voice to the mix. This would have a very negative impact on our schools. This will go to JCAR (Joint Committee on Administrative Rules) next.  You may also contact the representatives on that committee to urge them to dismiss this.
