Education in the Media - the Superman Hype

If you turned on your TV in the past few days it would be difficult to have missed the firestorm that has started with the opening of the documentary "Waiting for Superman." You can probably catch replays on TV or online, but here is a rundown of the education firestorm that is hitting the airwaves:

Oprah aired 2 episodes (Mon and Friday) centering on the themes and reaction of Waiting for Superman.

o        NBC is airing Education Nation this week.  This focus on education features the following programming (www.educationnation.com).

o        Sunday: Meet the Press (panelists included Arne Duncan; Robert Bobb, head of Detroit Schools; Randi Weingarten, head of American Federation of Teachers; Michelle Rhee, chancellor of D.C. schools)

o        Sunday: MSNBC town hall with Joe Scarborough (Randi Weingarten, Michelle Rhee, Davis Guggenheim, director of Waiting for Superman, Geoffrey Canada, CEO Harlem Children’s Zone)

o        Sunday: MSNBC teacher town hall with Brian Williams

o        Monday: Today Show, 30 min interview with President Obama specifically on education

o        Monday: Power Lunch on CNBC – how America is competing globally in education

o        Monday: TOM BROKAW AND SECRETARY DUNCAN AT THE SUMMIT live on MSNBC

o        Tuesday: “Morning Joe” Interview with General Colin and Mrs. Alma Powell on MSNBC: Joe and Mika discuss issues in education with General Colin and Mrs. Alma Powell, founders and chairs of America ’s Promise Alliance.

o        Coverage throughout the week on “Today,” “Nightly News with Brian Williams” and on MSNBC
